How to troubleshoot common smartphone app crashing issues

If an app keeps closing or freezing on your phone, it can be frustrating—especially if it’s one you use every day. The good news is there are simple steps you can take to get it working again. At Asurion, our experts help millions of customers fix their tech, from sluggish phones to apps that won’t open. Here’s how to troubleshoot app crashes on your iPhone® or Android™ device.

Check for app updates

Outdated apps can have bugs that cause them to crash.

  1. Open the App Store® or Google Play™ Store.
  2. Search for the app that’s crashing.
  3. If you see an Update button, tap it to install the latest version.

Restart your phone

Restarting clears temporary files and can fix minor software glitches.

  1. Turn off your phone.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. Turn it back on, then open the app again.

Check your internet connection

A weak or unstable internet connection can cause apps to freeze or close.

  1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if the problem improves.
  2. If using Wi-Fi, move closer to your router or restart it.

Clear the app cache and data (Android)

If you have an Android phone, clearing an app’s cache and data can help.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the app that’s crashing.
  3. Tap Storage > Clear cache.
  4. If the issue continues, try Clear data (note: this may sign you out of the app).

Offload or reinstall the app (iPhone)

For iPhones, removing and reinstalling an app can clear out corrupted files.

  1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Select the app and choose Offload App or Delete App.
  3. Reinstall the app from the App Store.

Update your phone’s operating system

App crashes can happen if your phone’s software is out of date.

  1. Go to Settings > Software Update (iPhone) or Settings > System update (Android).
  2. Install any available updates.

Check app permissions

Some apps need permission to access your camera, storage, or location.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps (Android) or Settings > Privacy & Security (iPhone).
  2. Make sure the necessary permissions are turned on.

When to get expert help

If you’ve tried all the above and the app still crashes, there may be a deeper software or hardware issue. Visit your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store for a free device diagnostic.
