It's date night, and you're at the movies with your partner. You silenced your iPhone, but didn't think about your Apple Watch. Midway through a suspenseful scene, an alarm starts blaring from your wrist. Everyone within a ten-foot radius turns to look at you. Whoops! Feeling mortified, you frantically turn off the alert.
Asurion Experts help you get the most out of your tech. Whether you want to reset your Apple Watch or need insurance for your smartphone, we have you covered. Here's how to silence your Apple Watch next time you're in a quiet environment.
Use Silent Mode to mute sounds
Silent Mode disables all sounds from playing on your device. You won't hear any alerts, beeps, or ringing when it's enabled. However, it doesn't turn off haptic vibrations, so you'll feel a gentle tap when an incoming notification arrives.
To mute an Apple Watch with Silent Mode, follow these steps.
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the Bell icon to enable the setting.
- Silent Mode is active when the bell icon is red with a diagonal line running through it.
- To disable Silent Mode, tap the bell icon again. It turns grey when deactivated.
Control Silent Mode through your iPhone
If you pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone, you can enable Silent Mode through the Apple Watch app.
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Turn on Silent Mode.
Use Theater Mode for complete silence and a dark screen
Theater Mode disables sound and prevents the screen from lighting up when you move your wrist or receive an alert. It's useful for minimizing visual and audio distractions from your Apple Watch. However, it doesn't disable haptics, so you'll still feel notification taps. Here's how to silence an Apple Watch with Theater Mode.
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the Masks icon.
- Theater Mode is active when the Masks icon is orange.
- If you need to view your watch screen while in Theater Mode, press the side button or tap the display face.
Turn on Do Not Disturb (Focus Mode)
Do Not Disturb silences all sounds and haptic notifications. You can set a time limit for it or schedule a Focus Mode between certain hours (like when you're asleep).
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the Moon icon. Tap Do Not Disturb or a Focus.
- Tap On. You can also set an end time, such as one hour or until you leave your current location.
Adjust sound and haptic settings manually
Maybe you don't want to turn the sound completely off. Or, perhaps you find haptics distracting. Customize your settings manually to match your preferences.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap the Volume Down or Volume Up icons to adjust the audio.
- Tap Haptics. Tap Default, Prominent, or Off.
Automatically silence during Sleep or Focus Modes
You can set up a Sleep or custom Focus on your iPhone and sync it to your Apple Watch. This option allows you to personalize sound and audio notifications on both devices according to a schedule you set.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Focus. Tap a Focus preset (Sleep, Personal, Work), or tap the + button to create your own.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to personalize notification settings and set a schedule.
- Tap Focus to return to the Focus menu. Turn on Share Across Devices to sync the Focus options with your Apple Watch.
After creating a new focus, the icon you selected appears in the Apple Watch Control Center. You can tap it to turn it on or off. If you have trouble setting up Focus on your iPhone, get tech help from Asurion Experts.
