How to set up and use parental controls on your child's smartphone

Fast fix

To set up parental controls on your child’s smartphone, go to the device’s Settings, create a secure passcode, and use built-in tools like Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) to manage screen time, app access, and online safety.

Smartphones are a huge part of kids’ lives these days—whether they’re texting friends, playing games, or watching videos. But as a parent, you probably want some guardrails in place to help them use their devices safely and responsibly.

At Asurion, we help families set up and get the most out of their devices every day. Many of us are parents too, so we understand how important it is to find that balance between independence and protection.

Here’s how to get started with parental controls, whether your child uses an iPhone® or Android™ phone.

What parental controls can do

Parental controls can help you:

  • Limit screen time and schedule breaks.
  • Restrict access to certain apps, websites, or content.
  • Prevent purchases without your approval.
  • Track location and manage privacy settings.

They’re also a great tool to support open conversations around tech use. Learn more about how to guide those conversations in this guide to parenting and tech.

If your child uses an iPhone

Apple includes a built-in tool called Screen Time that lets you control how and when your child uses their iPhone.

How to turn on Screen Time for your child:

  1. On your child’s iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Turn On Screen Time, then choose This is My Child’s iPhone.
  3. Follow the prompts to set up Downtime, App Limits, and Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Create a passcode only you know to prevent changes.

You can also set this up remotely using Family Sharing, which lets you manage controls from your own iPhone.

If your child uses an Android phone

Google’s Family Link app gives you control over how your child uses their Android phone—even from your own device.

How to set up Family Link:

  1. Download the Family Link app on your phone.
  2. Follow the prompts to create a child account or connect their existing one.
  3. Pair their phone to yours and adjust settings like screen time, app approvals, and location sharing.

Family Link also lets you lock the device remotely and track usage habits over time. And if your child is using their device for schoolwork, check out these recommended parental control apps for learning.

Tips for both Android and iPhone

  • Set a strong passcode or PIN that your child can’t easily guess.
  • Talk with your child about the rules you’re setting and why they matter.
  • Consider small touches that keep your kid connected—like setting a photo shuffle wallpaper with pictures of family and friends.
  • Check settings regularly—kids get tech-savvy fast.

These tools aren’t meant to replace conversations—they’re meant to support them.
