Why does my iPhone go straight to voicemail?

Try these steps if calls go straight to voicemail

It can be frustrating when calls go straight to voicemail. Here are some steps you can try to get your iPhone ringing again.

1. Turn off Do Not Disturb or Focus Modes

Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes automatically silence all calls when they're turned on. While they're useful to enable when you're busy or asleep, forgetting to turn them off results in a silent iPhone. 

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Focus > Do Not Disturb.
3. Review your Do Not Disturb settings and adjust them if necessary.

The Focus menu contains several other modes you may have enabled, such as Personal, Sleep, and Work. Check the settings for each one to verify they fit your preferences. 

2. Disable Silence Unknown Callers

The Silence Unknown Callers feature sends calls from people not saved in your contacts directly to voicemail. It helps reduce robocalls, but you may miss legitimate calls from other sources like the doctor's office or an appointment confirmation. Any messages from unknown callers may appear in Visual Voicemail.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Apps > Phone.
3. Tap Silence Unknown Callers. 
4. Turn the switch to disable the feature.

3. Check Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode disconnects all wireless connections, including Wi-Fi and cellular service. To verify it's off, open Settings and locate Airplane Mode. Switch to disable it.

You can also check Airplane Mode through the iPhone's Control Center. Swipe down from the top of your Home screen and look for the Airplane Mode icon. Tap the icon to disable it if it's on. 

4. Make sure Call Forwarding is off

Call Forwarding redirects incoming phone calls to another device. When it's on, your phone won't ring when someone calls you. Instead, the call goes to a phone number you specify. 

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Apps > Phone.
3. Tap Call Forwarding. 
4. Turn the switch off to disable the feature.

If you have a Dual SIM on your iPhone, repeat the steps for both phone numbers. 

5. Restart your iPhone

Software or app conflicts could cause a temporary issue that sends your iPhone calls to voicemail. Clear minor glitches from your device with a restart. 

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General > Shut Down.
3. Drag the switch to turn off your device. 
4. Press the button on the side of the iPhone to turn it back on. 

6. Update your iOS

Apple® releases updates for its iOS® several times each year. The updates fix known system bugs and install new features for your device. If you haven't updated your iOS recently, there may be a system conflict that interferes with your calls. Take these steps to install available updates.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General > Software Update.
3. Tap the available update to install it. 
4. Follow the prompts to complete the process.

Apple has an automatic update feature you can turn on. It searches for available updates and lets you know when one is available, so you don't miss out on critical system fixes. 

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General > Software Update.
3. Tap Automatic Updates.
4. Enable the switch for iOS Updates beneath the Automatically Install and Automatically Download headings. 

7. Check your signal or SIM card

If calling iPhone goes straight to voicemail, you may be outside your carrier's range. Check the signal status in the right-hand corner of your display. Anything below two bars indicates poor reception. 

A SIM card that's inserted incorrectly can also interfere with calls. Use a straight pin or similar pointy object to eject the SIM card tray. Position the SIM card so it fits snugly in the tray and reinsert it into the device. Test your connection once the iPhone recognizes the cellular signal.

8. Reset network settings

Resetting the network settings deletes your stored Wi-Fi password and returns your cellular settings to their original state. It can correct system conflicts that prevent calls from going through on your iPhone.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
3. Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.
