You want to connect your Google Home Mini® to your Lenovo® Chromebook™ so you can stream music, ask questions, or control smart devices hands-free. But getting them to work together isn’t always straightforward. At Asurion, our experts help people set up and troubleshoot their tech every day. Here’s how to easily connect your Google Home Mini to your Chromebook.
What you need to connect Google Home Mini to a Chromebook
Before you get started connecting your Lenovo Chromebook to your Google Mini, let’s make sure you’ve got everything you need:
A Lenovo Chromebook with Bluetooth capability. Most Lenovo Chromebooks will come with Bluetooth as standard. To check that it’s working, click the time in the bottom-right corner of your screen, then tap the Bluetooth icon. If it’s there and you can toggle it on and off, you’re good to go.
A Google Home Mini already plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. If your speaker is working correctly and connected to Wifi, it should light up and respond to “Hey Google.” If it's unresponsive, open the Google Home app on your phone to check your Wi-Fi settings. If it still doesn’t work, try unplugging it and plugging it back in.
The Google Home app installed on a phone or tablet (available on Android and iOS). On your phone, search for "Google Home" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and download it. You’ll use this app to control the speaker and complete the setup.
A Google account that you use on both your Chromebook and Google Home Mini. To avoid syncing issues, log into the same Google account on both your Chromebook and the Google Home app. You can check which account you're using on your Chromebook by going to Settings > Accounts or in the Google Home app by tapping your profile picture in the top right corner.
There is no native Google Home app for ChromeOS, so setup starts on your phone—but don’t worry, we’ll walk you through it.
Setting up Google Home Mini with a Chromebook
There are two main parts to this process. First, you need to set up your Google Home Mini, and then you need to pair it with your Chromebook.
Setting up Google Home Mini
If your Mini is already set up, you can skip this part. If not:
- Plug in your Google Home Mini.
- On your phone, open the Google Home app.
- Tap the + in the top-left corner, then tap Set up device > New devices.
- Follow the prompts to connect your speaker to Wi-Fi and your Google account.
Pairing your Chromebook with Google Home Mini
Once your Mini is set up, it’s time to make the connection:
- On your Chromebook, click the time in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the Bluetooth icon > Pair new device.
- Wait for your Google Home Mini to show up in the list. Tap to connect.
- When you hear a chime, they’re paired.
How to use Google Home Mini with your Chromebook
Once connected, you can:
- Use voice commands like “Hey Google, play jazz on Spotify®” from your Chromebook’s mic (if Voice Match is enabled).
- Cast videos from your Chromebook to a smart display connected to Google Home.
- Create routines that work across devices, such as turning off lights before bed and pausing music when it's time for homework.
Troubleshooting common issues
A couple of issues frequently arise, and here's how to resolve them.
Google Home Mini not connecting to Chromebook
If your Chromebook doesn’t see the Mini:
- Restart both devices.
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on for your Chromebook.
- Reset your Mini by holding the factory reset button for 15 seconds (check the base of your speaker).
Updating firmware and apps for compatibility
Sometimes the simplest fix is an update:
- On your phone, make sure the Google Home app is up to date.
- On your Chromebook, go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates.
