How to set up Xbox Series X with multiple users

It’s game night. You just powered up the Xbox Series X™, and your friends or family are lined up to play. But now everyone’s arguing over whose settings are on the screen—and who just messed up someone else's game save.

At Asurion, we know gaming because many of us are gamers ourselves. Our experts help customers with issues like this every day, and we’ve got some easy tips to try. Here's how to set up multiple users on your Xbox so everyone gets their own personalized experience.

Why set up multiple users on Xbox?

Setting up individual profiles makes it easier to share a console without stepping on each other’s progress. Everyone gets their own space to:

  • Track game saves and achievements.
  • Use custom privacy and display settings.
  • Share subscriptions and digital games when the console is set as a home Xbox.

It’s also the best way to set up parental controls if kids are playing.

How to add a new user on Xbox Series X

Adding a user takes just a few steps. You can sign in with an existing Microsoft® account or create one directly on the console.

  • Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  • Go to Profile & system, then select Add or switch.
  • Choose Add new.
  • Sign in with a Microsoft account, or select Get a new account and follow the steps.
  • Once added, the user will appear in the profile list on the home screen.

How to switch between users

Switching profiles is simple and keeps everyone’s settings intact:

  • Press the Xbox button.
  • Go to Profile & system.
  • Choose the profile you want to switch to.

That’s it—you’re now signed in with the selected profile.

How to remove a user from your console

If someone no longer plays on your Xbox, you can remove their profile:

  • Go to Settings > Account > Remove accounts.
  • Select the user you want to remove, then confirm.

This doesn’t delete their Microsoft account—just removes it from your console.

How to share games with other users

With the Home Xbox feature, one account can share digital games and subscriptions like Game Pass™ with everyone else on the same console.

  • Go to Settings > General > Personalization.
  • Select My home Xbox.
  • Choose Make this my home Xbox.

Only one account at a time can use this setting, so make sure it’s the one with the most games or subscriptions.

FAQ

Can multiple users use the same Xbox Series X?

Yes, each person can have their own profile with separate settings, saves, and preferences.

Do you need an email for each Xbox user?

Yes, every user needs a Microsoft account, which requires an email address.

Can different users share Xbox Game Pass?

They can, as long as the account with Game Pass has set the console as their home Xbox. All other users will have access too.

Will game progress be saved when switching profiles?

Yes—saved data is tied to each user profile, so switching won’t affect your progress. Just make sure to sign in with the right profile.
