How to set up Xbox Series X with Kinect

Still have a Kinect™ sensor from your Xbox One and wondering if you can use it with the Xbox Series X™? The answer is yes—with a few extra parts.

We get it—tech setups don’t always feel simple. That’s why Asurion Experts are here to help. Whether you're setting up motion controls or getting your old gear to work with new tech, we’ll walk you through how to connect your Kinect sensor to your Xbox Series X.

Can Kinect work with Xbox Series X?

Yes, but there’s a catch. The Xbox Series X does not have a dedicated Kinect port. To use a Kinect, you’ll need:

  • An Xbox One Kinect sensor
  • A compatible Kinect to USB adapter (third-party only—Microsoft no longer makes official ones)
  • A USB 3.0 port on your Xbox Series X

Note: Voice commands through Kinect are not supported on Xbox Series X. You’ll be able to use it mostly for motion-controlled games or apps that still recognize Kinect input.

How to connect Kinect to Xbox Series X

Here’s how to get your Kinect working:

  1. Plug the Kinect sensor into your Kinect to USB adapter.
  2. Connect the adapter’s power cable to a wall outlet.
  3. Plug the adapter’s USB cable into a USB 3.0 port on your Xbox Series X (rear ports work best).
  4. Power on your console. If recognized, your Kinect will turn on automatically.

You won’t see a Kinect settings menu like on older Xbox consoles, but the sensor should activate in supported apps and games.

What you can do with Kinect on Xbox Series X

While Kinect support is limited, you can still use it for:

  • Playing backward-compatible games that require Kinect (like Just Dance or Fruit Ninja Kinect)
  • Video recording or motion tracking in certain indie apps
  • Live-streaming with basic video input (some streamers use Kinect like a webcam)

Keep in mind, many new titles and most core Xbox Series X features don’t support Kinect functionality.

Troubleshooting Kinect setup issues

If your Kinect doesn’t power on or isn’t recognized:

  • Double-check all cables are secure and the adapter is plugged into power.
  • Try using a different USB port on the console.
  • Restart your Xbox with the Kinect connected.
  • Make sure your adapter is compatible with Xbox Series X.

Because Microsoft no longer supports Kinect officially, software updates for the device are no longer released.
