How to set up Xbox Series X with Dolby Atmos

If you want next-level surround sound from your Xbox Series X™, Dolby Atmos® is the way to go. Whether you're hearing footsteps behind you in a first-person shooter or getting immersed in a blockbuster cutscene, this setup adds depth and direction to your game audio.

At Asurion, we're the tech experts you can trust—each year, more than 30 million people rely on us to keep their tech running. Here’s how to set up Dolby Atmos on your Xbox Series X with either headphones or a home theater system.

What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is an advanced audio format that creates 3D sound. Unlike standard surround sound, Atmos places audio in a 360-degree space, so sound can move above and around you.

It works with:

  • Compatible soundbars or AV receivers
  • Dolby Atmos-enabled TVs
  • Headphones (with the Dolby Access app)

How to set up Dolby Atmos for home theater

To use Atmos with a soundbar or receiver:

  1. Connect your soundbar or AV receiver to your Xbox using HDMI ARC or eARC.
  2. On your Xbox, go to Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  3. Under Speaker audio, set HDMI audio to Bitstream out.
  4. Set Bitstream format to Dolby Atmos for home theater.

If this option is grayed out, make sure your device supports Dolby Atmos and your HDMI cable is high-speed.

How to set up Dolby Atmos for headphones

To use Atmos with headphones, you’ll need the Dolby Access app.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Store on your Xbox and download Dolby Access.
  2. Launch the app and follow the setup instructions.
  3. Choose With my headphones, then select Dolby Atmos for Headphones.
  4. You may be prompted to purchase or start a free trial.
  5. After setup, go to Settings > Volume & audio output, then set Headset format to Dolby Atmos for headphones.

You can use any pair of wired or wireless headphones—just note that Atmos processing happens through the Xbox.

Adjust in-game settings (optional)

Some games support custom audio modes. If your game has a sound settings menu, look for audio format options and select Dolby Atmos if available. This ensures the best possible sound profile.
