How to reset your Samsung TV

Your Samsung® Smart TV works hard, especially if you stream a lot of shows and play a lot of videos. It's basically a computer, so it's not surprising to occasionally see a frozen screen, find an unresponsive app, or have your TV not turn on at all. A reset will give your smart TV a fresh start and may solve any issues you're having.

At Asurion, we help you get the most from the tech you love, whether you want to take a screenshot on your laptop or fix a TV that keeps turning off and on by itself. Follow these simple steps to learn how to reset your Samsung TV.

How to reset your Samsung TV with a remote

A soft reset, or restart, may be the easiest fix for any problems with your Samsung TV. Here's how to restart your Samsung TV using your remote:

  1. Make sure your TV is turned on.
  2. Grab your TV remote, and press and hold the Power button until you see the Samsung logo flash onscreen.
  3. Watch the LED on the front of the TV—it will turn red and start blinking faster.
  4. Your TV should turn on again after a few seconds. When it does, check to see if your issues are fixed.

How to factory reset a Samsung Smart TV

If you've restarted your Samsung TV but you're still having issues, the next step is to try a factory reset. This will reset your TV to its original, out-of-the-box settings. A factory reset will erase all your data, so you'll have to reconfigure settings and install your TV apps from scratch. Here's how to factory reset your Samsung TV:

  1. Tap the Home button on your TV remote.
  2. Go to Settings > General.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. You'll see a prompt asking you to enter the PIN you selected for the TV. Don't remember making one? The default PIN is 0000.
  5. After that, your Samsung TV will automatically reset. When it does, turn on your TV. Your issues may have been solved.

Check your Smart Hub

The Smart Hub is the menu system for Samsung Smart TVs (available in 2011 models and later) that appears on your TV screen and allows you to navigate apps. If you have an issue with the Smart Hub—it may freeze or display the message “Smart Hub is being updated. Please try again later."—here are two solutions to try:

Restart your TV

  1. Turn off your TV, and unplug it from the outlet.
  2. Wait approximately 1 minute, then plug it in again.
  3. Press the Power button on your TV.
  4. Your TV should turn on again after a few seconds. When it does, check to see whether your Smart Hub is working. If it's not, try to reset it.
