Common issues that a factory reset resolves

A factory reset can address various problems that might be affecting your console. Some of the common cases where factory resetting your PlayStation® 5 can be helpful are:

  • Persistent software issues or glitches that affect gameplay, apps, or system functions.
  • Difficulties with installing system updates can sometimes be resolved by a full reset.
  • Slow performance or problems with data management that basic troubleshooting can’t solve.
  • If you're planning to sell or give away your PS5, a factory reset will remove all your personal data and accounts.

Backing up your data

If you’re troubleshooting or just looking to wipe the slate clean, this guide is here to ensure a smooth and effective reset process for your PlayStation 5.

Remember, this process will erase all data from your system, so make sure to back up any important game saves or data beforehand.

Backing up using PlayStation® Plus cloud:

  1. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  2. Select Saved Data.
  3. Select Console Storage > select a game > select Upload to Cloud Storage.

Backing up using an external drive:

  1. Connect the USB drive to the connection port on either the front or back of your console.
  2. From the PlayStation home screen, select Settings > System > System Software.
  3. Select Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
  4. Select the items you want to back up, then select Next > Back Up.
  5. After your console will restart and start the backup, select OK when prompted. Your console will restart again.

Ready for that factory reset? Follow these simple steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Select System > Reset Options > Reset your console.
  • Select Reset.

Using Safe Mode to factory reset your PS5

If your console turns on but won't allow you to get to the system settings, you can reset your PS5 in Safe Mode—a setting that limits your console to its basic software.

  1. Press and hold the Power button on the front of the console until you hear two beeps, ensuring your PS5 is completely turned off and not in Rest Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Power button again, releasing it after the second beep, to put your console in Safe Mode.
  3. Connect your DualSense controller to the PS5 using a USB cable. Then, pair the controller by pressing the PS button.

While in Safe Mode, select either Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). We suggest using the latter when your software is completely out of wack, or you can bring on an expert to help. Otherwise, the standard Reset PS5 will factory rest your console just fine.
