How safe is your tech: The top 5 clumsiest cities in America

The top 5 clumsiest cities in America

When deciding where to travel on your next vacation, you might consider the cities with the best barbecue, the best hiking trails, or even the city with the most mini golf courses (looking at you Myrtle Beach, South Carolina). But as you weigh your options and plan your vacation, it's important to consider how safe a city is before committing to a visit. Safe for your tech, that is.

There are endless ways that you can break your smartphone, but most damage is caused by drops and falls. To determine where in the country people are dropping and breaking their phones the least, we turned to our research team.

With no shortage of data from Asurion claims and uBreakiFix by Asurion repair statistics, the team compared the number of phone breaks and repairs per city to find out where people are more likely to damage their tech. Additionally, they looked at outside data like online searches for sprained ankles, and the number of orthopedic surgeons in the area.

With the results, we were able to find out just which cities require you to be on your tech guard the most. Here are the top 5 most clumsy cities, plus the 5 cities where people are a little more graceful.

The clumsiest cities in America

1. New Orleans, LA

From a night out during Mardi Gras to a rowdy Saints game at the Superdome, there is no shortage of the adventures you can have in New Orleans. During the day, you can check out the cool gravestones at the famous cemeteries and take a walk through some of the county's most beautiful neighborhoods in the garden district. With all the exciting things to do, see, eat, and drink (can't forget Bourbon Street), it's no surprise that New Orleans tops our list of the clumsiest cities in America.

2. Raleigh, NC

From local clothing shops to microbreweries and specialty restaurants, Raleigh is one of the fastest-growing cities for young people and entrepreneurs. And with such a bustling atmosphere and cool things to do, phones are bound to get broken.

3. Jacksonville, FL

With nearly endless sunshine and some seriously devoted football fans, is anyone really shocked that Jacksonville is one of the most clumsy cities? Not to mention that Jacksonville and other Florida beaches are some of the most popular spring and summer break destinations. With all that sun in your eyes and slippery sunscreen constantly applied, it's no wonder that Jacksonville residents are more likely to break their devices.

4. Richmond, VA

As one of America's oldest cities, there's so much history to see in Richmond. Visitors can hit the sites of important revolutionary war battles, civil war museums, and take the beauty of Ginter Botanical Gardens. With all these historic sites to see, we bet that phones are constantly snapping photos and more likely to be dropped or damaged in all the excitement.

5. Atlanta, GA

Atlanta is one of those cities where it's nearly impossible to do and see everything in one visit. Whether you're taking in a Braves game or hanging with the sharks at the aquarium, getting caught up in the excitement can potentially lead to more broken tech.

The least clumsy cities in America

  1. San Francisco, CA
  2. Chicago, IL
  3. New York, NY
  4. Seattle, WA
  5. Tulsa, OK

What makes a city clumsy?

Looking at our list of clumsiest cities in America, there may not appear to be an obvious correlation, but we think there are a few factors that play a part.

Weather: Everybody knows that water and electronics don't mix very well and cities like Raleigh and New Orleans see more than 100 days of rain per year. Plus, 10% of the top 10 cities on our clumsiest list are more hot and humid than the average city in the study. Maybe rainy days or sweaty, slippery hands can lead to more broken devices.

Sports: Apparently, sports games and tailgating can come with more consequences than a hangover. Over half of our top ten clumsiest cities are home to SEC football teams and several others are home to professional football stadiums as well.

Average resident age: Are older generations better at protecting their tech? Our data seems to think so. 40% of the 10 most graceful cities have a large population of people over 65 years of age including San Francisco, New York, and Tulsa compared to 20% of the top 10 clumsiest cities.

Things to do: While every city has amazing things to do and see, many of the cities on our list are popular Spring Break and summer destinations. Maybe it's the heat, but more likely, it's the margaritas. Our data also found that the least clumsy cities also had more museums than the ones in the clumsy list. Maybe a quiet day at the museum versus a rowdy sports game is a safer bet for your devices.
