Common reasons why your Pixel camera is not working
If your Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, or earlier model suddenly stops working, one of these issues could be the cause:
- Outdated software: Running an older version of Android may cause compatibility problems.
- Corrupted camera app: Bugs in the app itself can lead to crashes or malfunctions.
- Conflicting third-party apps: Other apps that use the camera may interfere with its operation.
- Lens obstruction or damage: Dirt, water, or physical damage to the lens can affect quality.
- Faulty camera sensor: Internal hardware problems may cause the camera to fail.
- Overheating: Excess heat can temporarily disable camera functions.
How to troubleshoot a Google Pixel camera
Clean the lens
If your photos look blurry, it might not be the camera itself. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away fingerprints, dust, or smudges.
Look for moisture
If your phone was recently exposed to water or steam, liquid may be inside the lens or housing. Make sure there’s no moisture around the camera or inside the phone.
Check the temperature
If your Pixel is overheating, the camera may stop working. Let the phone cool down before trying again.
Update the software
Your Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro camera problems could be caused by outdated software.
- Open Settings > System > System update.
- Check for and install updates.

Clear the cache and data
Sometimes old data files can cause glitches. Clearing cache can refresh the app without deleting photos.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > See all apps > Camera.
- Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.

Test your phone in Safe Mode
Safe Mode runs only factory-installed apps, helping you determine if a third-party app is causing the issue.
- On Pixel 5a and earlier: Press and hold the Power button, then tap Power off.
- On Pixel 6 and later (including Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro): Press and hold Power + Volume up, then tap Power off.
- Restart by pressing and holding the Power button until the phone turns on. You should see Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
Try opening the camera in Safe Mode. If it works, an app is causing the issue. Uninstall or update recently added apps and test again.
Fix Pixel camera won’t focus issues
If your Pixel camera won’t focus, try these steps:
- Clean the lens to remove smudges or dust.
- Tap the area of the screen where you want the camera to focus.
- Move closer to your subject—Pixel cameras may struggle with very close macro shots.
- Restart the Camera app or your phone to reset focus functions.
- If the problem persists, clear the app cache (see steps above) or test in Safe Mode to check for app conflicts.
Try a factory reset (last resort)
If nothing else works, a factory reset may resolve deeper software issues. Be sure to back up your data first.
- Open Settings > System > Reset options.
- Tap Erase all data (factory reset), then confirm.
