LG ice maker on the fritz? Try these 5 easy fixes

Illustration of ice cubes melting

If your LG® refrigerator stopped making ice, you’re missing out on one of the coolest features of your fridge. The good news: it’s usually an easy fix. We’ll explain why your ice maker may not be working and walk you through the troubleshooting steps.

At Asurion, we know you need your appliances to work for your family. Here’s our guide on how to fix an LG refrigerator that’s not making ice.

LG refrigerator ice maker troubleshooting

There are several reasons your ice maker may have stopped doing its job. We’ll walk you through five  simple fixes:

Turn on the ice maker

It’s possible–and the easiest fix—that your ice maker is simply turned off. To turn it on:

  1. Locate the ice maker on/off button, which is typically on the side or front of the ice maker compartment inside the freezer.
  2. Press and hold the on/off button for a few seconds until the indicator light turns on.
  3. On some models, there may be a wire or plastic arm that needs to be raised to the upright position to start ice production.
  4. You may need to wait up to 24 hours for a fresh batch of ice cubes.

Empty the ice bucket

An overflowing ice tray can signal your LG refrigerator to stop making ice. If it’s full, try this:

  1. Remove all ice cubes or chunks from the bin.
  2. Use a soft cloth or brush to wipe down the interior of the bin and remove any built-up frost or ice.
  3. With the bin empty and clean, the ice maker should start making ice again within 24 hours.

Check the freezer temperature

If your freezer is too warm, your ice maker may produce smaller ice cubes or stop making ice altogether. Here’s what to do:

  1. Locate the temperature control panel, which is typically inside the refrigerator compartment.
  2. Most LG refrigerators have digital controls that allow you to set the precise temperature—the ideal temperature for ice production is between 0 degrees Fahrenheit and -5 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize and the ice maker to produce new ice.

Check the water filter

A clogged water filter keeps water from getting into your machine, which means no ice. Try changing it.

If you need help finding or changing your water filter, see your owner's manual or lg.com.

Inspect the water inlet valve

  1. When the water inlet valve opens, it supplies water to your LG ice maker. If it’s not working, no ice. Here’s what to do:
  2. Turn off the water supply and unplug your fridge.
  3. Locate the water valve, usually found at the bottom rear of the appliance, then disconnect the water supply tubing.
  4. Place a bucket and an old towel underneath to catch any leaks.
  5. Check for clogs in the debris screen inside the tubing, which can be cleaned with soap and water or a mineral dissolver.
  6. If the fill tube is frozen, try increasing the water pressure to fix the issue.
