Try any of these methods
There are several methods you can use to answer the question, “How do I find out what model my iPad is?”
Check in iPad settings
This is the easiest and fastest way to figure out your iPad's model.
- Turn on your iPad by using either Face ID®, passcode, or Touch ID®, depending on your settings
- Go to the Settings app on your iPad and tap the General option.
- Tap on About, and a new page with details about your iPad will appear, including the Model Name and Model Number.
Look at the back of the device
You can also quickly find out the iPad model you’re using from the back of the device. This doesn’t even require you to turn on your iPad.
- Flip your iPad to view its back.
- At the bottom, there is small text under the name iPad. The writing is usually so small that you might need a magnifying glass. It's worth noting that not all iPad models have this writing on their backs.
- Find the section that looks similar to this: Model AXXXX, then write down the number that comes after Model.
- Go to Apple’s support page and in the search box near the bottom, type this number to find the model name. You can also find your iPad's Model Name by typing the Model Number into Google search.
NOTE: You can also find the model number inside the Lightning or USB-C connector on the upper side, if your iPad doesn’t have writing on its back. Do this in a brightly lit area or use an artificial light because the text in the connector is very small.
Compare physical features
Sometimes you can find the iPad model you’re using by simply looking at its physical features, especially if you’re a seasoned iPad user. The difference in design across models can offer some clues, but you can’t be entirely certain.
- Screen size: Measuring the screen size diagonally can help you determine the iPad model you have. For example, the latest iPad model (2025) has a screen size of 10.9″, while the iPad Pro® 13″ (7th gen) has a screen size of 13″.
- Connector type: Checking this will only tell you whether you’re using an older or newer iPad model. Older models usually use the Lightning connector for charging and transferring data. On the other hand, newer iPads, like the iPad Pro and some iPad mini® and iPad Air® models, now use the USB-C connector.
- Home button: In 2021, Apple discontinued the Home Button on iPads. The last model to have this button was the 9th-Generation iPad.
- Face ID: As of 2025, only four iPad models support facial recognition to unlock the devices—iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch, and iPad Pro 13-inch.it.
Use Apple’s published list
Last but not least, Apple lets you find your model easily on its model reference page. This page lists all its iPad models, from the first iPad released in 2010, to its latest one, the iPad Air® 11-inch (M3). Under each model, you can find information, such as the release year and Model Number, then match your Model Number to its Model Name.
